Cobra Kai Season 5

Where to start with this roller toaster? First I'll just say it has been one of my favorite shows of 2022. This show has been able to provide solid entertainment every season, along with adding new kids to follow and ultimately watch become adults. And though while I love this show for what it is, I do have to say it has some writing flaws in terms of being a bit repetitive in previous seasons, but in a way, it adds a little to the charm. In this season we get more boy drama from Sam. Miguel making bad choices. And some even more questionable choices coming from the adults in their lives. The show seems to have fallen into a pattern of writing the characters without much growth each season. That is, at least for the first few episodes.

Season 5 had the task of bringing an INSANE amount of character growth to the characters this time around and honestly did it pretty well. Johnny Lawrence has been especially fun to watch go from the crusty kid we know in the 1st movie to being the only loaf of reason in the first few episodes. No spoilers, but I am super happy for Johnnies character and everything going on for him. Heโ€™s almost an actual adult now. Even the kids, despite the way this season starts, really come into their own and have started to acknowledge each other's struggles.ย

Now onto some of the less serious stuff. Really this show has just been fun. Chozen has been an absolute treat to watch just be a goofy-ass dude at certain points. I wouldnโ€™t call it growth as we didnโ€™t get to see how he changed from his original appearance to now. But it is definitely a pleasant switch from the Chozen we saw in the last season, and completely grown away from the Chozen we saw in the original series. He does maintain his position as a voice of reason in the beginning, especially when Daniel starts going through hardships, but oh boy that is not how it ends.

As far as the fight scenes go, they can sometimes be a bit hard to follow when itโ€™s not one on one or there are more complex movements. Mostly this happens with the adults and itโ€™s hard to say if thatโ€™s an editing issue or just the way it was shot. The kids absolutely have the stronger choreography when it comes to their fights. But all in all, they are very entertaining.

This season didnโ€™t end quite the way I expected. That might be my fault though. I didn't even realize what episode I was on, and all of a sudden it took a sharp turn and headed right for the big ending. Honestly, I hope to see more Cobra Kai content, maybe some spin-off shows that aren't focused on Danny and Johnny. But the way the season ended leaves some potential for another season. Am I open to it? Fuck yes.

The show has always been a generally easy watch. The plot isn't complex, but the people and characters are enjoyable, and the return of old characters is always fun.ย

The fight scenes are well executed, and the stunt work especially from the kids especially.ย

By season 5, some of the drama is getting very repetitive between the kids especially when it comes to relationships.

The cast, crew, and script. Nastolgia is something that big production companies have been trying to recreate, mostly unsuccessfully (IMO). This show has really done well with not only providing that factor, but also giving you something new and further developing the story.ย
